In a heartfelt memorial titled ‘Jimmy Carter: The Departure of a Titan’, Obasanjo recounted his experience at a service held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia.

Obasanjo reflected on the pivotal role Carter played during his detention in 1995, attributing his freedom to Carter’s tireless efforts to intervene.

“President Carter was one of my foreign friends who risked everything to help secure my release. He was the only non-African leader who visited Abacha to personally plead for my freedom,” Obasanjo said.

Their connection, rooted in shared values and humble beginnings, extended beyond politics. Obasanjo compared their upbringing, highlighting the discipline and morality instilled by their parents.

“He grew up in a farming family in Plains, Georgia, while I was raised in Ibogun-Olaogun, Ogun State. Our parents instilled similar virtues—hard work, integrity, and humility,” Obasanjo shared.

Their military backgrounds also deepened their bond, first meeting when Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s military Head of State.

Obasanjo commended Carter’s unwavering commitment to Africa’s progress, particularly in Southern Africa, where he played a crucial role in dismantling apartheid and colonial rule.

“Carter’s dedication to African causes, especially his first state visit to Nigeria in March 1978 as a sitting U.S. President, showcased his dedication to the continent’s development,” Obasanjo stated.

He also recounted how media mogul Ted Turner’s involvement exemplified Carter’s network of support. Turner played a vital role in advocating for Obasanjo’s release, offering to provide for his family anywhere in the world during his ordeal.

Reflecting on Carter’s humility and leadership, Obasanjo noted the profound impact Carter had on his life. “He led with humility and compassion, always carrying a team that shared the same ideals and goals. His legacy will continue to inspire,” Obasanjo said.

As he bid farewell to his dear friend, Obasanjo expressed his gratitude for Carter’s enduring influence and his commitment to humanity.

“For me, I have lost a true friend, but I look forward to meeting him again in paradise. May his soul rest in peace.”
