Thief Jailed For Seven Months After Stealing Bag Containing Paris Olympics Security Plans
A man has been sentenced to seven months in prison for stealing a bag containing security plans for the Paris Olympics from an employee of the Paris town hall, according to a judicial source.
The culprit, born in 2001, appeared before a court in the French capital after the theft occurred on Monday evening at the Gare du Nord station.
The stolen bag belonged to an engineer from Paris City Hall, who had placed it in the overhead luggage compartment on a train.
Initial concerns were raised when it was revealed that the bag contained a computer and two USB keys with security plans for the Paris Olympics. However, later investigations clarified that the USB key held only non-sensitive information related to road transport during the Olympics.
The suspect, already known to police for previous thefts on public transport, was also charged for refusing to provide his telephone code to authorities.
Paris city hall has announced that the city employee will be investigated to determine if any internal security rules were violated by carrying the USB key.
With approximately 35,000 security personnel expected to be deployed each day during the Olympics, including municipal police officers from the capital, vigilance remains high to prevent street crime and potential terror threats, given France’s history as a target of extremist attacks.
The Paralympics, scheduled from August 28 to September 8, also demand robust security measures to ensure the safety of participants and spectators alike.
