Thousands Protest In Niger Republic, Calling For US Troop Withdrawal
Thousands of people gathered in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, on Saturday, April 13, demanding the immediate departure of US troops from the country. The protest, which took place in front of the National Assembly Headquarters in Niamey, included students and notable figures from the military regime. The crowd chanted slogans denouncing “American imperialism” and advocating for “the people’s liberation.”
Niger had asserted in mid-March that a 2012 cooperation agreement with the United States had been unilaterally imposed. Despite French troops being expelled by the end of 2023, approximately 1,000 American soldiers remained stationed in Agadez city in the northern region.
In late March, Niger disclosed that the US would present a plan to withdraw its troops from the country. Although Washington did not officially comment, it acknowledged contacting Niger for clarification.
Sheikh Ahmadou Mamoudou, a respected religious leader, emphasized the need for the swift and peaceful departure of American troops, as promised. He stated, “They said they would leave, so let them depart swiftly and tranquilly.”
While flags from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Russia were visible during the protest, organizers advised demonstrators against using slogans that insulted the US or burning its flags.
