remains uncertain about an imminent increase in the monthly allowance for corps members.

The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, clarified the government’s stance during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. She highlighted the current economic challenges, including food inflation and the rising cost of living, as factors influencing the government’s cautious approach.

Bio-Ibrahim stated, “We can’t say for sure; we all understand that resources are dwindling, even oil revenues are not as they used to be, but we will find innovative ways of ensuring that corps members’ welfare is taken care of.”

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to exploring inventive solutions to address the financial concerns of corps members, assuring that their welfare remains a priority.

It’s noteworthy that the monthly allowance for NYSC members was last increased in January 2020 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, raising it from N19,000 to N33,000. However, given the current economic climate, the government is treading cautiously on the prospect of another increment.

Bio-Ibrahim shed light on ongoing reforms within the NYSC scheme, revealing plans to transform it into a revenue-generating agency. This strategic shift aims to equip corps members for the job market, fostering entrepreneurship and providing support for their career paths.

As the government navigates the delicate balance between financial constraints and the welfare of NYSC members, the nation awaits the unfolding of innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by these young service volunteers.
