Tinubu Orders Nigeria-Benin Border Reopened, Trade Resumes
According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate reopening of the Samiya International Border in Kebbi State, which connects Nigeria to the Republic of Benin. The announcement was made public on February 7, 2026, during a one-day official visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to the Nigeria Customs Service Area Command in Birnin Kebbi.
Addressing officers and personnel, Adeniyi warned against collusion with smugglers or any illegal groups that could undermine the Federal Government’s directive, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. He explained that reopening the border is intended to facilitate the movement of goods, strengthen security, and ensure cargo is cleared within 48 hours.
Adeniyi highlighted the introduction of advanced technology to monitor goods and prevent diversion from approved destinations. He added that President Tinubu has also authorized the movement of trucks through the Benin Republic and Kebbi State to the Niger Republic, stressing that modern systems will improve oversight and reduce abuse of the transit process.
The Comptroller-General further cautioned transporters and traders to adhere strictly to transit regulations, noting that violations could result in significant penalties and potentially disrupt trade relations with neighboring countries.
During the visit, Adeniyi received a warm welcome from officers of the Kebbi Area Command and was accompanied by senior officials from the Benin Republic Customs Service, led by Imura Idirisou, along with other members of the delegation.
