FIFA Boss Infantino Launches New Plan To Supercharge World Cup Excitement

According to Ireporter Online, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced that the global football organization will distribute 100,000 footballs to 500 cities across the United States as part of efforts to build momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Infantino made the announcement while addressing delegates at the United States Conference of Mayors’ Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. Each of the 500 member cities represented at the meeting will receive 200 footballs in the run-up to the tournament, which the United States will co-host alongside Canada and Mexico.

The footballs are intended for community and celebratory events as preparations intensify for the competition, scheduled to commence on June 11, 2026. Featuring 48 teams, 104 matches, and 16 host cities across three nations, the 2026 World Cup is expected to be one of the largest sporting events in history.

Describing the tournament as a global festival, Infantino said it would unite people through football and shared experiences. “I was delighted to meet the mayors of the 11 U.S. host cities who will welcome the world in 2026, each bringing their own unique energy to this historic event,” he said.

In addition to the host cities, several other locations are expected to serve as base camps for participating teams. Of the 64 proposed Team Base Camps currently under consideration, 50 are situated in the United States. Infantino projected that U.S. cities could see an economic boost of approximately $30 billion as more than seven million fans travel to the tournament.

Reacting to FIFA’s announcement, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Mayor David Holt, described the donation as a major highlight of the meeting. “We were thrilled to welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the FIFA World Cup trophy to our winter meeting. His generous and spontaneous announcement of 200 soccer balls for every member city was a highlight of the week,” Holt said in a social media post.
