Trump Optimistic About Finalizing TikTok Sale Amid April 5 Deadline

President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Sunday about reaching a deal regarding TikTok before the April 5 deadline, which mandates that its Chinese owner, ByteDance, sell the app or face a potential ban in the United States.

“We have a lot of potential buyers. There’s tremendous interest in TikTok,” Trump told reporters while on Air Force One.

China had recently rejected Trump’s suggestion of reducing tariffs in exchange for Beijing’s approval of the sale to a non-Chinese firm.

Earlier this month, Trump mentioned that the U.S. was in discussions with four groups keen on acquiring TikTok, which boasts 170 million American users.

The U.S. government passed a law requiring TikTok to sever ties with ByteDance or face a ban, citing concerns over potential Chinese exploitation of the app for surveillance or influencing U.S. public opinion.

This law, which took effect on January 19, one day before Trump’s inauguration, was initially delayed, allowing TikTok to remain operational. However, that delay will end on April 5.

Trump remained optimistic about a potential deal, saying, “I’m pretty certain there’ll be a deal with TikTok.” When asked if the deadline would be extended without a deal, he indicated that he was not considering that option.

Trump had previously attempted to ban TikTok during his first term over national security concerns but has since become more open to the platform. He acknowledged, “Selfishly speaking, I won the young vote by 36 points. Republicans generally struggle with the youth vote, and I think TikTok had a big impact on that.
