Inspector Michael Odey has been found guilty of extortion and dismissed from the force, while ASP Doubara Edonyabor and ASP Talent Mungo have been suspended pending further investigation.
According to the statement released by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Service Commission (PSC) officially approved the suspensions of both officers. The dismissal of Inspector Michael Odey followed thorough Orderly room proceedings and a comprehensive review conducted by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16.
The statement further explained that the implicated officers will face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) to address disciplinary issues involving senior officers. The salaries of the suspended officers have been stopped pending the outcome of the investigation.
The action taken by the police comes in response to reports of extortion brought to light by a human rights activist in Delta State, Harrison Gwamnishu. The activist accused the officers of arresting a man and extorting $3,000 from him before “dumping” him in Port Harcourt. The Rivers State Police Command promptly responded to the allegations, confirming the identification of the implicated officers and assuring the public that the findings of the investigation would be disclosed.
This decisive action by the police demonstrates their commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within the force. It sends a clear message that misconduct and extortion will not be tolerated, and those found guilty will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
