UMG expressed dissatisfaction with TikTok’s licensing terms in an open letter to the artist and songwriter community, dated January 30. The letter revealed TikTok’s alleged attempt to force an undervalued deal on UMG, not reflective of the platform’s substantial growth.

Negotiations for a new contract hit a deadlock, and the existing deal, expiring on January 31, will not be renewed, UMG disclosed. Reasons for the breakdown included demands for higher compensation for artists, safeguards against AI-generated recordings, and addressing online safety concerns. UMG criticized TikTok’s proposed payment to artists as significantly lower than other major platforms and highlighted the platform’s inadequacy in dealing with content-related issues like bullying, bigotry, harassment, and explicit deepfake content featuring artists.

TikTok, in response, accused UMG of prioritizing greed over the well-being of their artists and songwriters. This dispute could have far-reaching consequences for TikTok’s 1 billion users and UMG’s global roster of musicians, including Drake, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, U2, Elton John, and Nigerian talents like Mr. Eazi, Tekno, Larry Gaaga, and Tiwa Savage.
