The study, conducted by scientists from the University of Maryland in the United States, reveals that the Moon’s core cooling has led to a contraction of approximately 100 meters in circumference over the past few hundred million years.

Although this process may seem slow, it is causing significant surface deformation in parts of the Moon’s southern pole, including areas designated for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III manned landings.

The Moon’s contraction is accompanied by seismic activity, known as moonquakes, prompting worries about potential dangers in areas near fault zones for upcoming human explorations.

Co-author of the study, Thomas Watters from the National Air and Space Museum, emphasizes the importance of considering the global distribution of young thrust faults and their potential activity when planning the location and stability of permanent outposts on the Moon.

Faults in the Moon’s southern polar region were linked to a powerful moonquake recorded by Apollo seismometers over 50 years ago. Certain areas in the Moon’s southern pole were identified as particularly susceptible to landslides triggered by seismic shaking.

Moonquakes, unlike earthquakes on Earth, can last for hours, posing a potential threat to future lunar settlements. The Moon’s surface, composed of loose sediment from billions of years of asteroid and comet collisions, makes it prone to shaking and landslides.

NASA’s Artemis missions, scheduled for late 2024, plan the first crewed mission to the Moon in more than five decades. Researchers aim to identify hazardous locations for human exploration, crucial for preparing for lunar challenges such as engineering structures to withstand seismic activity or safeguarding individuals from high-risk zones.
