UN General Assembly On The Brink: Vote Ahead For ‘Unconditional’ Ceasefire In Gaza
The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on Wednesday regarding a draft resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza—a symbolic step following the recent US veto of a similar initiative in the UN Security Council…READ MORE…
The draft resolution calls for “an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” and demands “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” reflecting considerations by the United States and other firm allies of Israel.
While the resolution is non-binding, it also requests “immediate access” to extensive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, who have faced over a year of conflict with Israel, particularly in the severely affected northern region of the territory.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza was triggered by Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,208 individuals, predominantly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official data. This count includes hostages who perished or were killed while being held in Gaza.
During the attack, militants kidnapped 251 hostages, with 96 still believed to be in Gaza, including 34 that the military has reported as deceased.
Israel’s subsequent military response in Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 44,786 people, mostly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, which the UN considers reliable.
“Bleeding Heart of Palestine”
Palestinian UN ambassador Riyad Mansour described Gaza as “the bleeding heart of Palestine” during last week’s Assembly debate on the resolution. He stated, “The images of our children burning in tents, suffering from hunger and devoid of hope for the future, after enduring pain and loss for more than a year, should haunt the world’s conscience and prompt action to end this nightmare,” calling for an end to the “impunity.”
In anticipation of the vote, Israel condemned the draft resolution. Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon stated, “If you genuinely want peace, it starts with dismantling this infrastructure of hate and the glorification of terror,” referencing accusations against the humanitarian agency UNRWA, whose employees Israel claims assisted with the October 7 attacks.
The draft resolution also addresses the necessity for accountability, requesting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to propose ways for the United Nations to help promote accountability.
Although an earlier draft proposed establishing an international mechanism for investigating and prosecuting breaches of international law against Palestinians, that language was not included in the current draft for the vote.
Another resolution up for consideration on Wednesday will urge Israel to respect UNRWA’s mandate and allow the continuation of “safe and unhindered humanitarian assistance” operations after Israel’s vote to prohibit these actions. This ban, set to take effect on January 28, has drawn global criticism, including from the US, a key ally of Israel.
