In response to the recent attack on Olumide Akpata, the Edo State Labour Party’s candidate, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending its Student Union Government. The suspension, effective from April 29, 2024, comes in the wake of events that occurred in the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on April 12, 2024. Following careful consideration of the investigative report, the Vice Chancellor approved the suspension, aiming to maintain peace and order within the university community.
As part of the suspension measures, all officers of the students’ union are required to hand over all union properties in their possession to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by April 30, 2024. Additionally, a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from faculties, schools, and institutes has been appointed to oversee student activities during the period of suspension.
The decision has been communicated to the university community, emphasizing the need for compliance from the erstwhile union officers. This action underscores UNIBEN’s commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring the safety of all individuals within its premises.
The incident has also had repercussions on academic activities, with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIBEN chapter, threatening not to resume work for the Second Semester academic session scheduled to commence on April 28th. This protest stems from the disturbance of a meeting between Olumide Akpata and UNIBEN staff at the Senior Staff Club, resulting in the assault of a lecturer.
As the university takes steps to address the situation, it remains focused on fostering a conducive learning environment while upholding its core values of integrity and academic excellence.
