Tanaka Ryan Ziso, a final-year student studying Civil and Water Engineering, faced arraignment before Bulawayo Magistrate Maxwell Ncube on charges of causing harm to individuals based on race. He remains in custody until April 2, 2024.
The controversy ignited on March 13, 2024, when Ziso, known online as ‘The Royal Priest of Chitungwiza’ (@iamryantanaka), posted derogatory and divisive messages directed at the Ndebele people. The offensive tweet sparked widespread condemnation on social media, prompting a significant backlash.
Despite facing criticism, Ziso continued to fuel the controversy with further offensive remarks, inciting mixed reactions from online users. While some condemned his actions, others expressed support, deepening the divide among netizens.
In the face of mounting pressure, Ziso issued an apology, albeit one perceived as insincere by many. Critics argued that his apology was prompted solely by the growing backlash, calling for his expulsion from NUST University.
The incident underscores the power and responsibility wielded by individuals on social media platforms, highlighting the importance of fostering tolerance and understanding in online discourse.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case serves as a reminder of the consequences of spreading hate speech and the imperative need to promote unity and respect within communities.
