According to CBS News, federal prosecutors unveiled charges against Schultz on Thursday, accusing him of utilizing his top-secret security clearance to obtain classified US government records at the request of an unnamed individual supposedly residing in Hong Kong, with Schultz purportedly pocketing $42,000 in the process.
Schultz, 24, from Willis Point, Texas, has been serving in the Army since November 2018 and is assigned to the 506th Infantry Battalion, as per court filings.
Although the charging documents did not explicitly implicate the Chinese government, much of the classified information Schultz is accused of divulging pertains to China.
Beginning in June 2022, Schultz and his alleged co-conspirator reportedly communicated online and via encrypted messaging apps, prioritizing the transmission of exclusive documents, including details about Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and sensitive US military systems and capabilities.
Over several months, Schultz allegedly sold dozens of sensitive records to his handler for thousands of dollars each, motivated by financial gain. In one exchange, he expressed a desire to regain possession of his BMW.
Despite Schultz’s role in safeguarding classified information, he allegedly discussed sensitive matters with his Chinese contact, even after the arrests of two US Navy sailors in August 2023 for similar offenses.
These charges follow recent cases of military leaks, including an Air National Guardsman posting classified records online and an Air Force employee leaking information related to Russia’s activities in Ukraine.
Schultz faces six counts, including conspiracy and bribery, and is expected to make his initial court appearance on Friday.
