UNICEF’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, during a visit to assess ongoing projects at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday.
Fagninou stated that UNICEF is working closely with various African governments to find alternative funding sources to offset the losses resulting from the USAID budget cuts. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to maximizing available resources and ensuring efficiency despite the reduced funds.
As a precaution, UNICEF is scaling back travel and staff numbers to maintain operational efficiency. Fagninou reassured that while the cuts are significant, their impact is less severe than anticipated, and the organization continues to provide crucial support to governments and communities.
He praised the ongoing health and education programs in the Hajj camp, where former Boko Haram members and their families are being rehabilitated, noting the dedication of local UNICEF staff working with limited resources. Despite funding challenges, UNICEF remains committed to its humanitarian mission in Nigeria and beyond.
