of Abia State, on Wednesday.
According to ireporteronline, unknown gunmen attacked the troops of the Joint Task Force South-East Operation, known as UDO KA, who were stationed at a checkpoint along the Umuahia-Owerri Road in the Umuahia South Local Government Area.
In a statement released by Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, the Army confirmed that the assailants were part of an “irredentist group” linked to IPOB and ESN.
The statement urged the people of the South-East, particularly in Abia, to assist the Army by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. It also included a contact number for anyone with relevant details: “Please note that any relevant information should be passed to Operation UDO KA by dialing 193 and pressing Option 2,” the statement added.
Lt. Col. Unuakhalu reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to carrying out its constitutional duty of protecting lives and property, in accordance with global best practices and the established rules of engagement.
It is also noteworthy that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has called on the federal government to facilitate the repatriation of ESN commander Simon Ekpa, whom he accuses of being behind the violence in the South East. Ekpa, based in Finland, has been blamed for enforcing sit-at-home orders and orchestrating criminal activities in the region.
