The meeting was meant to involve chiefs of staff from ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member countries and was scheduled to take place in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

However, the meeting was suspended indefinitely for “technical reasons.”

Originally, the purpose of the meeting was to apprise the organization’s leaders about the best strategies for activating and deploying the standby force. ECOWAS has not yet provided specific details about the force or its action timeline. The leaders have stressed their preference for a peaceful solution to the crisis.

In addition to the postponed meeting, thousands of coup supporters gathered near a French military base in Niger, with protesters expressing anti-French and anti-ECOWAS sentiments. The new leadership in Niger has accused France, a close ally of the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, of influencing ECOWAS’ firm stance against the coup.

The international community, including the European Union, African Union, and Germany, has expressed concern for Bazoum’s wellbeing. Reports suggest that his detention conditions are worsening. According to various sources, Bazoum and his family have been denied basic necessities like food, electricity, and medical care.

Bazoum was ousted from power on July 26 by members of his guard, leading to a complex political situation in Niger. The country has experienced multiple coups in its history, and the current crisis is further exacerbated by a jihadist insurgency and deep political instability.
