Niger Coup: What Senators Told Tinubu About Option Of War – Senator Ningi

During his appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” show, Senator Ningi explained that there must be a joint sitting of the National Assembly before the Nigerian Armed Forces can be deployed for warfare in any location.

While President Tinubu inquired about using the Nigerian Armed Forces for military action, Senator Ningi pointed out that the Constitution specifies certain conditions.

He emphasized that for such an action to take place, a joint sitting involving both the Senate and the National Assembly is required.

The Senator acknowledged that President Tinubu provided a letter outlining the situation in ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), and they informed him that war was not a feasible option. Instead, they recommended focusing on other aspects.

Senator Ningi, who chairs the Northern Senators Forum, noted that the Senators praised ECOWAS for their efforts to resolve the political crisis in Niger Republic. He emphasized that a coup is not something that should be negotiated or accepted under any circumstances.

Senator Ningi highlighted the historical and close relationship between Nigeria and Niger, citing their cultural, geographical, and economic ties. He emphasized that the countries are almost the same, aside from the colonial map. The use of the Nigerian naira as legal tender in Niger Republic underscores the closeness of their relationship.

Senator Ningi stressed that there are alternative methods to address the coup plotters without resorting to the use of force. He expressed his belief that diplomatic solutions and other approaches should be explored.

Following the extraordinary summit in Abuja, ECOWAS issued a resolution to deploy its standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger. The bloc also urged the African Union to endorse their decisions and warned member states against actions that hinder the peaceful resolution of the crisis.
