What Service Chiefs Told Senate Before Confirmation Of Their Appointment

The newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu were confirmed by the Senate on Thursday.

The upper chamber conducted a screening of the top military officials, and during a closed-door session, the service chiefs answered questions regarding defense-related matters and other important issues.

Earlier in the week, the President had sent a letter to the Senate requesting their confirmation of the service chiefs.

Upon resuming plenary on Thursday, the Senate commenced the screening process, with each nominee taking the podium to outline their plans for addressing the country’s security challenges if confirmed.

The confirmed service chiefs are Maj. Gen. C.G Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff, and AVM H.B Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff.

During the screening, each chief briefly introduced themselves to the Senators.

The Chief of Defence Staff expressed the commitment of the Armed Forces under his leadership to tirelessly safeguard the nation and dutifully serve the Nigerian people.

Next, the Chief of Army Staff addressed the Senators, acknowledging the challenging security situations that Nigeria has faced, impacting the economy and society as a whole. He emphasized that insecurity has disrupted Nigeria’s development plans and expressed his determination to bring fresh proactive, adaptive, and inclusive approaches to address the issue. He pledged to do his best to justify the President’s confidence in him if confirmed by the Senate.

The Chief of Naval Staff stated that the Nigerian Navy will enhance monitoring and surveillance efforts to improve the effectiveness of their operations. He promised to enhance existing strategies, develop new ones, and foster inter-agency cooperation to combat oil theft.

Finally, the Chief of Air Staff highlighted the adoption of additional air power to counter threats to the country. He emphasized that his primary focus will be on enhancing air fighting capabilities.

Overall, the Senate’s confirmation of the service chiefs signifies their approval of the nominees and their readiness to take on the important responsibility of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
