Why Benue Assembly Suspended Four Members

In the ongoing intra-party dispute within the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), four members of the state assembly faced suspension on Monday due to a confrontation with those aligned with Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The suspension of the legislators—Cephas Dyako, Gyila Solomon, Akya Douglas, and Anthony Agom—was linked to an alleged sabotage of plenary proceedings.

This action occurred shortly after a meeting of party elders at the Government House, during which a vote of confidence was passed in favor of the governor.

The governor had been facing opposition from both the state working committee and local government chapters.

Led by former Senate President Ameh Ebute and others, the APC elders, before the suspension, advocated for an emergency stakeholders’ meeting to address internal issues.

The conflict between the APC leadership in Benue and the governor has been ongoing since June 2023, revolving around a power-sharing formula.
