Why I Worked Against Tinubu During APC Primaries – Adamu

Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has clarified his support for former Senate President Ahmad Lawan during the party’s convention in June 2022.

Prior to the APC primaries, Adamu had announced Lawan as the consensus candidate of the party.

However, President Bola Tinubu issued a statement distancing himself from the purported endorsement.

In an interview with Arise TV, Adamu explained that the decision to support Lawan was made by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

He emphasized that he led the convention as the party chairman and after the convention, the NWC visited Tinubu at his residence to assure him of their support for Lawan.

Adamu expressed his disappointment that he and the party’s efforts in leading the APC to victory in the 2023 general election are not recognized and appreciated.

He mentioned that he expects some level of understanding and praise for their achievements.

He emphasized that he respects his fellow countrymen, regardless of their political persuasion, and believes that the party’s success should be acknowledged.

He highlighted the positive performance of President Tinubu since his inauguration and commended well-meaning Nigerians and supporters of the party for recognizing his achievements.

Adamu acknowledged that in a presidential system, different opinions are expected before a convention, but once the party makes a decision, every member is expected to follow.

He criticized those who have used his support for Lawan as a point of attack against him.

He stressed that he has maintained a good working relationship with President Tinubu since the convention and that the president has given attention to his concerns and thoughts.

Adamu concluded by stating that he knows what he is doing and remains committed to his role within the party.
