Why Nigeria Needs Electoral Reforms That Respect Citizens’ Choices – Gov Mutfwang

Speaking at the annual colloquium themed “Electoral Judicial Reforms: Imperatives for Nigeria’s Democracy, Governance, Leadership, and Selection Process,” organized by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Central Business District-Abuja, Mutfwang stressed the need for transparent and fraud-free processes to ensure credible leadership emerges through free and fair elections.

In his keynote address titled “The Imperatives for Electoral and Judicial Reforms,” Governor Mutfwang highlighted various challenges plaguing the electoral process, including voter intimidation, violence, and irregularities that undermine the credibility of elections. He called for reforms that strengthen democracy and enhance citizen participation, with a particular emphasis on the judiciary’s role in upholding electoral integrity.

Mutfwang advocated for sweeping judicial reforms to establish a fair, efficient, and independent judicial system that prioritizes citizens’ rights and respects their electoral choices. He criticized instances of disregard for judicial precedents and principles of stare decisis, stressing the judiciary’s responsibility to ensure legal compliance, especially in pre-election matters.

The governor emphasized that electoral reforms are essential for maintaining the integrity and legitimacy of the electoral process, fostering public trust in democratic institutions, and ensuring the conduct of free and fair elections. He underscored the importance of political will, stakeholder engagement, and robust implementation and enforcement for the successful implementation of these reforms.

Alfred D. Skari, Chairman of the Haske Foundation, reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to humanitarian endeavors, peace promotion, unity, and providing support to families affected by loss of breadwinners and livelihoods.

The panel discussion featured former House of Representatives members, including Hon. Beni Lar and Hon. Dachung Bagos, as well as Alh. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, Chairman of IPAC, among others.
