Why Tijani Appointment Was Confirmed Despite Past Remarks – Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has clarified the Senate’s decision to confirm Dr. Bosun Tijani as the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, despite his controversial past, including a statement in which he referred to Nigerian lawmakers as “morons.”
Speaking during a special Iftar at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, in honor of President Bola Tinubu’s 73rd birthday, Akpabio acknowledged that Tijani’s screening process in the Senate was challenging due to his previous remark. However, he emphasized that the lawmakers ultimately relied on their trust in President Tinubu’s judgment…READ MORE…
During the screening, one senator highlighted a past instance where Tijani allegedly labeled all lawmakers as “morons.” When questioned, Tijani admitted to making the statement, explaining that it reflected his feelings at the time. Akpabio recounted how he confronted Tijani, questioning his audacity to seek confirmation despite such comments.
Nonetheless, Akpabio stated that the senators decided to endorse Tijani based on their confidence in President Tinubu’s discernment. “We confirmed him because we believed that you must have seen something special in him. You have a keen sense of judgment when it comes to people,” Akpabio told the President.
President Tinubu, reflecting on his decision to appoint Tijani, acknowledged that he faced resistance from close associates who were wary of Tijani’s past critical remarks on social media. However, Tinubu stood by his choice, citing Tijani’s talent and potential to make meaningful contributions.
The President remarked that criticism alone was not a sufficient reason to disregard someone’s abilities, suggesting that Tijani’s previous frustrations could instead drive his commitment to public service. He expressed pride in Tijani’s performance, noting that his past criticisms did not overshadow his current dedication to governance.
In response, Tijani expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, admitting that he initially expected reprimand due to his previous activism and critical stance. However, he praised the President’s willingness to overlook past differences and recognize his potential to contribute positively to the nation.
