Wike’s political trajectory encountered a significant shift during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, triggering discord with the PDP hierarchy over his insistence on upholding the party’s internal power-sharing arrangement. He advocated for the presidential ticket to be zoned to southern Nigeria, a stance that caused him to withhold support from the PDP’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and instead throw his weight behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who emerged victorious.

Amidst debates surrounding his allegiance following his appointment as minister by President Tinubu, Wike addressed the speculation during a media interaction in Abuja, declaring, “I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Have you ever seen me change anything?”

Despite his noticeable absence from recent PDP gatherings and campaign events, Wike expressed no remorse for his actions, emphasizing the need to forge ahead. Reflecting on his political choices, he remarked, “The one I supported before, what happened? I have decided to take a break. As you see me now, everybody should carry their cross.”

Furthermore, Wike defended his stance during the presidential election campaign, questioning the basis for any disciplinary action against him for advocating the party’s constitution and exercising his right to support his preferred candidate.

“Dicipline me for what? That I did what? I am an advocate of the party’s constitution,” Wike asserted, challenging any grounds for disciplinary measures against him.
