Addressing journalists in Abuja after a closed-door security meeting with the Senate at the National Assembly, Wike emphasized the progress made in combating crime in the FCT.

Wike’s appearance before the legislators followed an invitation by the upper chamber for a briefing on the security situation in the FCT.

In his remarks after the meeting, the FCT Minister highlighted a reduction in crime rates and the apprehension of two notorious kidnappers in the FCT.

While acknowledging the existence of kidnapping incidents, Wike suggested that some cases were orchestrated by insiders, such as housekeepers or drivers, who conspire to abduct their employer’s child.

He explained, “The kidnappings you hear, sometimes, are stage-managed by people. There are some internal arrangements.”

Wike stressed that combating such crimes posed challenges, particularly when they involved individuals close to the victims.

Despite acknowledging ongoing security efforts, Wike refrained from providing absolute assurances of an end to criminal activities, noting the complexities involved.

He concluded, “We are not saying that we have gotten where we want to be, but we are doing a lot and people must acknowledge that what used to be is not what we are seeing now.”
