Wike’s Men Makes Fresh Move As Rivers Assembly Gets New Majority Leader, Chief Whip

Mr. Major Jack (PDP- Akuku Toru 1) and Mr. Frankline Nwabochi (PDP-Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni 1) have been elected as the Majority Leader and Chief Whip, respectively, of the Rivers House of Assembly. The new leaders were elected by 27 members during Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly chamber, where they also took the oath of office.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule (PDP- Obio/Akpor 1) congratulated the newly appointed officers and urged them to stay committed to their new responsibilities. During the session, Mr. Enemi George (PDP-Asari Toru II) moved a motion to commend the speaker, which received unanimous support from members who praised the speaker’s leadership qualities and his team.

Members also expressed their appreciation for the house leadership’s commitment to democratic principles. Additionally, the ‘Financial Autonomy Bill, 2023’ successfully passed its second reading. The speaker emphasized the bill’s significance and expressed confidence that the governor would assent to it. However, the speaker alleged that Governor Siminialayi Fubara had withheld funds earmarked for managing the Assembly in November. Despite this, he assured the house’s readiness to continue its constitutional functions despite any negative distractions.

The ‘Financial Autonomy Bill, 2023’ has been referred to the House Committee on Public Accounts for hearings and other legislative scrutiny.

The 32-member house, which had been divided into two factions since October following the impeachment of Majority Leader Edison Ehie, with Speaker Matins Amaewule retaining 26 members and Edison Ehie operating with 4 members.
