Windstorm Devastates Kwara State, Leaving 200 Homes And Schools Damaged

Residents of Kwara State are appealing for assistance after a devastating windstorm destroyed no fewer than 200 homes and public schools in Ilorin and the Ogele/Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Impact of the Windstorm

The severe weather disrupted Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Ogele-Eyenkorin and surrounding communities, resulting in widespread destruction. According to The PUNCH, more than 200 houses lost their roofs, while over 20 structures, including schools, shops, and other businesses, collapsed.

The rainstorm also toppled electricity poles and wires, leading to power outages, while debris from the storm obstructed drainage systems at the Kuntu Bridge in Ilorin West Local Government Area.

Communities Affected

The most affected areas include Eyenkorin, Ogele, Ifelodun, Ifesowapo, Orisunbare, Odo-Akuo, Apata Ajele, Alagbado Eyenkorin, Basa, Yakoyo, and Lekki.

Among the damaged structures were Ogele Primary School, Ansarul-Deen Primary School, and D-Light A-Nur Nursery/Primary School, all of which lost their roofs. In addition, approximately 15 private schools, including Community Secondary School in Apata Ajele and Wilson School in Alagbado, were severely affected, with some classrooms collapsing. The roof of Government Day Secondary School was also blown off, while sports facilities in Adeta, Ilorin West, sustained damage.

Calls for Government Intervention

Many residents have been left homeless and are currently relocating their belongings to stay with neighbors while awaiting assistance from the government and compassionate individuals.

Speaking on behalf of the affected community, Zubairu Abiola, Vice Chairman of the Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin, expressed his distress and called on the state government to provide urgent relief.

“The rainstorm has rendered many residents homeless. We appeal to the state governor, Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, to extend his support to the affected communities, as he has always done even during normal times,” Abiola stated.

Residents are hopeful that the state government will respond swiftly to address the situation and provide relief to those affected.
