BREAKING: Tension In Kano As Tribunal Fixes Date To Deliver Judgement On Governorship Election Dispute (DETAILS)

The Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in the capital city of Kano is set to deliver its judgment on Wednesday, September 20th. This comes as a response to the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) contesting the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) in the March 18th election.

The tribunal’s announcement follows the conclusion of closing arguments presented by lawyers representing the involved parties on August 21st. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared NNPP’s victory with a margin of 128,897 votes.

The APC, backed by Mr. Ganduje, contested the results, alleging violations of the Electoral Act 2022. The party further challenged the qualification of Governor Yusuf to run for the election.

During the petition hearing, the APC called 32 witnesses and submitted various documents, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine report. The petitioner also tendered polling unit result sheets and overall result sheets.

In addition to claiming irregularities, the petitioner argued that Governor Yusuf was not a registered NNPP member at the time of the election, presenting an INEC-certified NNPP membership register to support their case.

The NNPP’s lead counsel, Bashir Tudun-Wuzirchi, countered the petition, asserting that it was an academic exercise and lacked substantiated evidence. He emphasized that the tribunal lacked jurisdiction over pre-election matters related to membership.

The case has seen various dramatic developments both within and outside the courtroom. Allegations of attempted bribery among panel members emerged, deepening uncertainties about the case’s outcome. Additionally, spiritual supplications and prayer sessions have become integral aspects of the proceedings.

Despite a ban on protests by the police, politicians organized mass gatherings and prayer sessions in the state, underscoring the high stakes and tensions surrounding the tribunal’s decision.
