The Customs Service had initiated the sale of seized rice to the public on Friday, February 23, offering the commodity at a discounted rate of N10,000 per 25kg bag.

However, amidst the chaotic rush, a horrifying accident unfolded. According to a chilling account by medical doctor Yemoka Adunola, shared via social media, the victim fell while waiting in the queue with his wife. Before he could regain his footing, the surging crowd inadvertently trampled him, resulting in his untimely demise.

“A man just died in my hospital,” Dr. Adunola’s post read. “He was stamped on after falling at the customs office trying to get rice. He was on the queue with his wife when he fell down and couldn’t get up on time, which resulted in people stamping on him. So sad. Survived by very young children.”

The heartbreaking incident underscores the dire circumstances faced by many Nigerians amidst economic challenges, where even basic necessities like rice prompt desperate and dangerous rushes.
