Fittipaldi, a former Formula 1 driver and team owner, choked on a piece of meat during the holiday festivities, leading to a cardiac arrest. Despite initial resuscitation efforts at the hospital, he succumbed to complications from the incident.
In a heartfelt statement, Fabiana Ecclestone, vice-president of motorsport for FIA South America, expressed deep sorrow at Fittipaldi’s demise, highlighting his significant contributions to the international racing scene and lamenting the irreplaceable void left by his departure.
During his illustrious career, Fittipaldi made 35 starts in Formula 1 between 1972 and 1975 and founded the renowned Brazilian F1 team, Fittipaldi-Copersucar. His racing achievements included notable finishes at prestigious events such as the German and Argentinian Grand Prix in 1973 while racing for Brabham.
Born on Christmas Day in 1943, Fittipaldi followed in the footsteps of his father, Wilson Sr., in pursuing a career in motorsport. Joining his younger brother Emerson, who had already made a mark in Formula 1 with Lotus, Fittipaldi Jr. carved his own legacy in the racing world.
