State Police: Some Governors Act Like Emperors And Can Abuse It – Abah
Joe Abah, former Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, has emphasized the need for checks and balances to prevent potential abuse of power by some state governors if state police were to be established. Abah highlighted the existing authoritarian tendencies among certain governors, likening their behavior to that of “emperors” who could exploit state police for political gain…….READ ALSO Presidency: Tinubu Approve State Police, Forest Guards
During an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Abah advocated for the creation of state police despite concerns about potential abuse. He argued that addressing the security challenges in Nigeria requires innovative solutions, including the establishment of state police, but stressed the importance of implementing safeguards to prevent misuse.
Abah cited examples of effective governance by certain governors, such as Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Babagana Zulum of Borno State, and Dave Umahi, the former Governor of Ebonyi State. He urged for collaborative efforts to devise mechanisms for funding state police and ensuring its impartiality during elections.
Regarding constitutional reform, Abah expressed skepticism about relying solely on the National Assembly and proposed alternative approaches, including involvement of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in drafting a new constitution. He underscored the necessity of periodic constitutional review to address evolving societal needs and criticized the lack of executive initiative for constitutional amendments despite persistent flaws in the 1999 Constitution.
Abah advocated for a transition from the presidential to the parliamentary system of government, citing potential benefits such as enhanced accountability of the executive and legislature to the populace. He emphasized the imperative of leveraging political structures that prioritize developmental goals and foster democratic governance in Nigeria.
