This decision comes on the heels of the submission of reports by sixteen state governors to the National Economic Council (NEC), expressing unified support for the creation of state police forces. These reports also include proposals for constitutional amendments to facilitate the implementation of state-level law enforcement agencies.

The documentation was presented during the 140th NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

According to a Presidency official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the effectiveness of these security initiatives will hinge largely on the actions taken by the state governors. The official underscored the growing consensus on the imperative of state policing, especially as the National Assembly deliberates on constitutional revisions to accommodate this provision.

Regarding forest guards, the official highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance their capabilities through comprehensive training, provision of equipment, and recruitment drives. While acknowledging the presence of forest guards in several states under the purview of agriculture ministries, the focus now is on bolstering their efficacy in combating forest-related crimes.

Ultimately, the onus for strengthening both state police forces and forest guards lies with the respective state governments, signaling a decentralized approach to security management across the nation.
