Wike Defends Threats Against PDP Governors: “No Apologies”

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike declared last night that he would not apologize for his threats regarding any Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-controlled state that challenges his position within the party.

Speaking on Channels Television, Wike also made it clear that he would never support his former political protégé and successor as Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, again.

Widespread anger erupted in Rivers State following the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP’s decision to transfer control of the state party’s structure to Wike.

Wike criticized the PDP Governors Forum, particularly the communiqué read by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, which showed support for Fubara’s control of the party’s structure in Rivers State. He felt this move undermined him and was a direct response to what he perceived as an affront.

Wike expressed his frustration, saying, “I stand by my statements without apology. The actions taken against me are unacceptable, and I will not passively accept this.”

He dismissed concerns about the figurative nature of his threats, clarifying, “I did not intend to incite violence. My comments were a response to perceived injustices and political interference.”

Regarding Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clark’s call for his arrest, Wike questioned Clark’s party affiliation and commitment to party dues.

Addressing claims that he is a mole within the PDP, Wike insisted that his role was transparent and supported by the party. He emphasized his commitment to the party’s structure and denied any allegations of disloyalty.

Wike dismissed concerns about potential political instability from supporting an Oyigbo or Ogoni candidate, asserting that he was merely addressing what he viewed as unfair practices within the party.

Finally, Wike firmly stated he would never support Fubara again, citing personal and political grievances.

The decision by the NWC has intensified tensions, with supporters of Fubara expressing their dissatisfaction and calling for a reconsideration of the NWC’s stance.

Fubara’s camp has reacted strongly, questioning the legality of the NWC’s decision and expressing a commitment to support the governor regardless of party affiliation. They emphasize that the people of Rivers State remain united in their support for Fubara and are prepared for future political battles.
