In a press briefing on Thursday, the SSN alleged that some NCS officers were violating the 2023 Customs Act and civil service regulations by refusing to proceed on terminal leave. The group warned that this non-compliance could disrupt the agency’s leadership structure and undermine recent reforms.

SSN spokesperson Sunday Asuku called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure adherence to retirement policies, emphasizing the potential harm to the agency’s integrity and recruitment efforts.

“The refusal of senior officers due for retirement to vacate their offices blocks newly promoted officers from assuming roles and hinders new recruitment. This is especially critical as the administration tackles youth unemployment,” Asuku said.

Responding, NCS spokesperson Abubakar Maiwada dismissed the allegations as baseless, stating, “There is no evidence of officers delaying retirement. The claims are unfounded and appear overly proactive.”

While the SSN highlighted risks to the NCS’s reputation, the Customs Service assured the public of its compliance with statutory regulations.
