During a celebration for Anti-Corruption Day held in Yenagoa, organized by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Mrs. Ekere Usiere, the ICPC Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Rivers State, warned that the country faces grave consequences if its citizens do not take action.
Delivering a paper titled “From Fear to Courage: Overcoming Barriers to Whistleblowing in Nigeria,” Usiere remarked, “It is undeniable that corruption has left Nigeria in dire straits, leading to economic stagnation and socio-political deterioration.”
She emphasized that if corruption remains unchecked, it could ultimately lead to the nation’s downfall. “We urgently need an effective whistleblower mechanism as a vital tool in the fight against corruption,” she stressed. “Citizens require courage to blow the whistle; true courage is the absence of fear.”
Usiere encouraged Nigerians to overcome cultural, psychological, and systemic obstacles to reporting corruption, asserting, “This initiative is crucial and timely. We must don the armor of courage in our struggle against corruption. If you witness wrongdoing, you must speak up.”
Earlier, Engr. Felix Ogbe, the Executive Secretary of the NCDMB, commended the NCDMB ACTU for organizing the event and reaffirmed his commitment to shielding the institution from corruption through preventive measures.
Ogbe stated, “Today, we observe International Anti-Corruption Day, focusing on raising awareness among youth regarding the harmful impact of corruption on socio-economic development. At NCDMB, we are taking concrete steps to combat corruption by supporting ACTU members and participating in capacity-building efforts.”
He also highlighted the board’s initiatives to evaluate corruption risks across key operational areas within the organization, including human resources, procurement, and planning, aiming to reduce vulnerabilities to corrupt practices.
The event wrapped up with a debate competition featuring secondary schools from all six geopolitical zones of the country, with Federal Government College, Warri, Delta State, taking first place, followed by Federal Government College, Kazaure, Jigawa State, in second.
