Colombia’s Finance Minister Resigns Amid Corruption Investigations
Colombian Finance Minister Ricardo Bonilla has stepped down at the request of President Gustavo Petro following allegations that he ignored bribery involving lawmakers...READ MORE…
This resignation comes as part of a broader corruption probe linked to one of the largest scandals in Petro’s administration.
Last week, a former advisor claimed that Bonilla was aware that parliamentarians were being bribed in exchange for their support on essential reforms proposed by President Petro. The attorney general’s office has implicated Bonilla in the controversy, stating that $200,000 in public funds was used for these bribes.
While Bonilla insists on his innocence, President Petro announced in a press conference that his deputy, Diego Guevara, would take over the position. Petro explained that he requested Bonilla’s resignation not due to guilt, but to protect him from the pressure stemming from his loyalty to the administration.
The corruption scandal has impacted several high-ranking officials and members of both the ruling coalition and the opposition. In July, the country’s intelligence chief, a close ally of Petro, also resigned after being accused of facilitating bribes to expedite legislative processes. President Petro, who took office in 2022 with a commitment to social reforms, now faces significant challenges amidst this unfolding controversy.
