Edo Court Sentences School Proprietor And Teachers For Negligence

In a judgment delivered on Thursday, Magistrate Caroline Oghuma sentenced Okugbowa to six months in prison. He was also given the option to pay a fine of N100,000 for publicly referring to a pupil’s mother as a prostitute.

The three teachers—Blessing Osarodion, Egharevba Esosa, and Isioma Nimen—were found guilty of negligence for failing to care for two pupils under their supervision. Osarodion and Esosa each received one-year sentences with an option for a N100,000 fine for their negligence, which resulted in injuries to a six-year-old student.

Nimen was convicted for unlawfully abandoning a two-year-old pupil and received a three-month prison sentence or an option to pay a N50,000 fine.

These offenses violated Sections 167(2), 412, 270, and 267 of the Criminal Laws of Edo 2022.

According to the charge, Okugbowa’s offense occurred on September 8, 2023, at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters in Benin, where he behaved in a manner likely to disrupt public peace. He was accused of publicly insulting Mrs. Blessing Aigbudu, the mother of the two pupils, in front of her husband and bystanders.

The teachers, who were responsible for the care of the students at the academy, failed to secure the safety of the six-year-old girl, leading to serious facial injuries sustained on September 29, 2021. It was noted that she received no first aid from the teachers during the incident, which occurred in the school’s waiting room.

The trio was also charged for neglecting to supervise another pupil in January 2022, thereby putting the child’s safety at risk.
