He emphasized that it is crucial for the military to confront these challenges, which have plagued Nigeria for the last 15 years, with decisive action. Musa made these remarks during a decoration ceremony for the newly promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Army and Navy in Abuja.
On Friday, the Nigerian Navy, Army, and Air Force announced the promotion of 306 senior officers.
“Our nation is facing significant challenges, and it requires individuals of strength and integrity to navigate through them—that is our objective,” Musa stated. “These ranks not only reflect a considerable responsibility but also a profound commitment to our nation and its citizens.”
He urged the officers to recognize the importance of their roles, saying, “Having reached the pinnacle of your careers, remember that the armed forces will rely on your leadership and expertise to protect our nation. Nigeria is counting on us. We must do everything in our power to defend democracy, both within our borders and across the region. This is a collective duty and responsibility.”
Musa continued, “For the past 15 or 16 years, we have been battling insurgencies, terrorism, and banditry, and it is clear that we need to tackle these issues head-on. I urge all of you to think critically and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure that 2025 sets a new precedent for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, reminded the newly promoted Major Generals that their new ranks entail increased responsibilities. “From this point forward, you will be held to a higher standard of accountability. As Major Generals, your actions—both good and bad—hold significant weight for the system, especially regarding national security. Therefore, I encourage you to uphold your new status and avoid actions that could disgrace the military or diminish the trust placed in you,” Oluyede said.
Similarly, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, highlighted the importance of diligence and integrity in their new responsibilities. “While hard work has brought you to this notable achievement, it takes even more effort to maintain your position. As leaders in service, which you now are through this promotion, it is imperative that you conduct yourselves with the highest standards. Make sure your actions reflect the Nigerian Navy’s steadfast commitment to refusing all forms of illegal activities and criminal behavior within our operational sphere.
