In the last two decades, each NFF board has performed worse than the last. If anyone is bold enough to propose hiring a former Mali manager for the Super Eagles, they should step down immediately when it becomes clear that Nigeria won’t be represented at the 2026 World Cup.

The NFF must understand that football is a national treasure, not a personal asset for them to exploit. Their poor decisions shouldn’t cause the pain of over 170 million Nigerians. Whenever our football falters, it brings everything to a halt. You only need to witness the desolation on the streets and the lengths people, particularly kids, go to just to watch a game. When Nigeria wins, the celebration is explosive, but when things go wrong, the sorrow is palpable.

The NFF’s choice of Eric Chelle as coach is a direct insult to the passion and expectations of Nigerian football fans. They spent months teasing us with the idea of hiring a world-class coach, only to settle on Chelle, whose credentials are questionable. Can Chelle lead us to compete against the world’s best if we qualify for the World Cup? How can the NFF expect fans to remain silent and accept this choice?

Instead of sidelining our local coaches, the NFF should have allowed Chelle to work alongside them to elevate our national teams. Sadly, Nigeria remains the only country where its national teams don’t have a consistent style of play. This reflects the incompetence of the officials, who make decisions without proper foresight.

The NFF’s justification for Chelle’s appointment is absurd. They claim he took a pay cut to accept the job, as if that makes a difference. Did he apply for the position or not? Why should we care if he earned more with an Algerian club? If the NFF understood football, they would spare us this club-versus-country debate. Surely, anyone would jump at the opportunity to coach the Super Eagles.

The real question is: What did Chelle accomplish with Mali at the last AFCON? His nationality and background don’t change the fact that his appointment doesn’t seem to be based on merit. Are we supposed to be impressed that Chelle is French-Malian? His qualifications are dubious, and if this move is based on the idea that his French ties bring something valuable to the table, that’s misguided.

Comparing Chelle’s appointment to the one given to Stephen Keshi in Mali is insulting. Keshi’s record speaks for itself—he led Togo to the 2006 World Cup, which earned him international recognition. This was not the case for Chelle.

The NFF has failed to recognize the value of Nigerian coaches. Why did our local coaches, who worked hard to qualify for the CHAN, get sidelined for Chelle and his team? What does the NFF’s leadership under Ibrahim Gusau really stand for? How can they justify replacing Ilechukwu and Ogunmodede just because they’re Nigerian? If the NFF insists on bringing in a foreign coach, they should at least ensure that local coaches are given fair opportunities at higher levels.

Gusau’s recent statement about appointing Chelle to manage both the Super Eagles and CHAN teams is rude and disrespectful to local coaching talent. Why is it that Nigerian coaches can’t rise to such positions? If the NFF’s aim is to test Chelle’s capabilities, they should arrange friendly matches to evaluate his skills, rather than undermine our local coaches.

The NFF’s focus should be on nurturing homegrown talent and ensuring that our national teams develop consistently. If Chelle is truly the answer, let’s use his appointment to support the training of younger coaches in Nigeria.

With the World Cup qualifiers coming up in March 2025, one has to wonder how influential Chelle is in the French coaching scene. What kind of preparation will the Super Eagles have under his leadership? Will the NFF even manage to settle the long-standing debts owed to players since 2020 before the crucial qualifiers begin
