The duo was assigned by President Bola Tinubu to mediate the crisis that erupted within the Assembly since January 13, 2025, when Obasa was initially removed by over 30 lawmakers.
To restore stability, key figures of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Akande and Osoba, engaged in several meetings with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers in Marina, Lagos.
Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member, previously disclosed that the mediators had proposed a power-sharing solution, suggesting that both Obasa and Meranda step down in favor of a new Speaker from Lagos West Senatorial District.
At Monday’s plenary session, Meranda officially resigned, stating that her decision was in the interest of democracy and Assembly stability. She emphasized that true leadership requires selfless sacrifice.
Following her resignation, Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai and Chief Whip Okanlawon Sani also vacated their positions.
According to an insider, part of the mediation agreement involved Obasa withdrawing the lawsuit he had filed against the Assembly over his removal. However, it remains unclear whether the initial arrangement, which required Obasa to step down as well, will still hold.
GAC member Taiwo indicated that Obasa’s future as Speaker is now a personal decision, as the party has expressed full support for his reinstatement.
Commenting on the development, Lagos APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi expressed satisfaction with the resolution, emphasizing that the party’s priority is restoring harmony within the House.
“We just want peace in the House. The kind of unity that existed before should be reinstated,” he said.
