On March 9, 2025, Hajiya Amina Umar Namadi, the First Lady of Jigawa State, launched a training program aimed at empowering 600 women through the “Waste to Wealth” initiative. This initiative is part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 in Jigawa, organized by the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) and UNICEF, held at the Government House in Dutse.
Hajiya Amina Umar Namadi emphasized that the program aligns with the state’s 12-point agenda, which promotes environmental sustainability, waste-to-wealth, and women’s empowerment. She noted that transforming plastic waste into useful products offers a dual solution to plastic waste management and climate change mitigation by reducing reliance on virgin plastics, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting a circular economy.
The Managing Director of JISEPA, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, highlighted that this event also ties into UNICEF’s global Green Rising initiative, which encourages youth-led climate action. Green Rising’s goals in Nigeria include planting 100,000 trees, recycling 100,000 kg of plastic waste, and mobilizing 100,000 youth for climate action by 2025.
