of 2024 for some Nigerian families. The real tragedy extends to Nigeria itself. In Ibadan, on December 18, a stampede claimed the lives of 35 individuals, most of whom were children.

Just 90 hours later, more tragedies struck—one in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, resulting in 10 fatalities, and another in Anambra State where over 17 lives were lost, with the toll still rising at the time of reporting. These incidents unfolded as people desperately sought food.

A fact-check report by Premium Times revealed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s remarks about “eating free food when you see it” were placed in context. The publication clarified that Akpabio’s comment, made on June 14, 2023, came after the inauguration of the 10th Assembly and was directed at his Senate colleagues during a celebratory dinner in their honor, not at the general public. The video surfaced showing senators laughing in response.

However, could some Nigerians have interpreted Akpabio’s statement as encouragement to rush for freebies, leading to these tragic outcomes?

If 2023 was difficult, 2024 has been even tougher.

This type of review is not a new endeavor. Historical records suggest that performance appraisals were first introduced by Walter D. Scott of WD Scott and Co. in Sydney, Australia, back in the 1920s.
