Driver In Central China Car Ramming Sentenced To Suspended Death Penalty
A man who drove his car into a crowd of primarily school children in central China last month has been sentenced to a suspended death penalty with a two-year reprieve, according to state media reports on Monday…READ MORE…
In November, identified as Huang Wen, the perpetrator repeatedly rammed his vehicle into a group outside a primary school in Hunan province, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
When the car malfunctioned and came to a stop, Huang exited the vehicle and attacked nearby bystanders with a weapon before being apprehended.
Thirty individuals, including 18 students, suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack.
The court concluded that Huang was attempting to “vent his emotions” over financial difficulties from investments and family conflicts, according to CCTV.
Under Chinese law, Huang’s sentence could be converted to life imprisonment after the two-year period.
Many users on Chinese social media expressed outrage that the sentence was too lenient. “How is this possible? Shouldn’t it be immediate execution?” one Weibo user questioned. Another added, “Don’t release this person. I’m afraid.”
Footage from the day of the incident circulated on Chinese social media, depicting the chaos as dozens of children fled the scene in panic, crying for help. Another video showed a bloodied man being beaten with sticks by onlookers as he lay on the ground next to an SUV.
This year, China has witnessed multiple mass casualty events, such as stabbings and car attacks, which have put its reputation for public safety in jeopardy. Some analysts connect these incidents to heightened anger and desperation due to the slowing economy and increasing social stratification.
In November, a separate attack resulted in the deaths of 35 people and injuries to over 40 when a man drove his car into a crowd in Zhuhai, marking the deadliest assault in the country in a decade. Additionally, eight people were killed and 17 injured in a knife attack at a vocational school in Yixing the same month.
