2027: Coalition Similar To 2015 Won’t Defeat APC – Sowunmi

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, has stated that replicating the 2013 coalition that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its subsequent victory in 2015 will not be effective in unseating President Bola Tinubu or the APC in the 2027 elections.

In an interview with The IREPORTER, Sowunmi explained that the political context in 2027 is significantly different from what existed in 2015 when the APC coalition defeated then-President Goodluck Jonathan. “People are mistakenly assuming that simply replicating the 2015 strategy will was changed. No party today is likely to willingly deregister itself for the sake of a merger,” he said.

Sowunmi emphasized that the PDP would rather welcome individuals and stakeholders who are interested in joining its platform, rather than dissolve into a broader coalition.

“The PDP, a well-established party since 1998 with numerous governors, will not dissolve to accommodate anyone’s ambition. I also believe the Labour Party and the NNPP would be hesitant to take such a path,” he stated.

He further challenged the belief that combining various political heavyweights would guarantee enough votes to surpass the APC, noting that support bases often do not transfer seamlessly.

“Yes, their individual support bases may appear large, but those voter groups are often mutually exclusive. Those who support one candidate may not support another simply because they’re in the same alliance. Combining their forces doesn’t guarantee a unified voter base,” Sowunmi added.

He also questioned the credibility of the proposed coalition, noting that many of its potential members are familiar political figures with established records, making it difficult for them to present themselves as a fresh alternative.

“Nigerians will scrutinize their past actions. These are not unknown faces. Rebranding familiar figures as a new political force is unlikely to succeed,” he said.

Sowunmi concluded by raising doubts about the internal cohesion of such a coalition, especially with multiple individuals harboring presidential ambitions.

“If they couldn’t collaborate within existing parties like the PDP, LP, NNPP, APGA, AA, or SDP, what makes them think they can unite effectively under a new banner? Who among them will be the presidential candidate? Who will step aside to be the vice? Their individual ambitions will likely become a stumbling block,” he stated.
