and the Red Cross have recovered 54 bodies. Unfortunately, there was no manifest for the boat, which makes it difficult to confirm the exact number of passengers. The journey took place at night, and none of the passengers had life jackets.”
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) reported that the boat was en route to a market in Niger State when it capsized along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger.
Governor Calls for Urgent Action
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and called for increased collaboration among agencies to prevent further waterway accidents.
In a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Ismail Isah, Ododo emphasized the dangers of waterways connecting Kogi and Niger states. “Efforts must be made through inter-agency collaboration to enforce safety measures and prevent such tragedies,” he said.
He assured that the state government would support the injured in their recovery and continue to work on enhancing waterway safety.
