Labour Crisis: States Abandon NLC Strike Over Minimum Wage Implementation
As of December 1, 2024, the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) faces significant hurdles, with multiple state chapters opting out of the action. Lagos and Rivers State lead with the highest offer of ₦85,000. However, 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory are yet to begin implementation.
States like Imo, Sokoto, Oyo, and Katsina have publicly dissociated from the strike, citing agreements with their respective governments on the implementation of the wage. Meanwhile, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Zamfara, and the FCT remain committed to the strike, calling for full compliance nationwide.
The NLC leadership has dismissed the reluctance of some states, emphasizing the need for collective action to ensure the welfare of workers.
