The lawmakers, who were formerly members of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), made their move to the Labour Party earlier this week, with Governor Alex Otti officially welcoming them into the ruling party during a ceremony.

Expressing her disapproval, Aisha Yesufu, a prominent figure within the Labour Party and a staunch supporter of the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, condemned the lawmakers’ actions. Taking to her official platform, she emphasized the need for consequences for such defections, stating that elected officials who switch parties should also forfeit their seats.

She remarked, “Hope they are ready to also lose their seats. This nonsense where people are voted on a party ticket and then decamp to join the ruling party needs to be punished by the law. You should have the right to decamp, but you must forfeit the seat you won on another platform.”
