Akpabio Lands In Another Trouble Over ‘Holiday Allowances’ Amid Economic Crisis
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has revealed its intention to initiate legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the distribution of “holiday allowances” to senators by the Clerk of the National Assembly…CONTINUE READING
This controversial move comes at a time when nearly 70 percent of Nigerians are grappling with severe economic difficulties.
Through its official X account, SERAP issued a concise statement, announcing its lawsuit against the Senate President, who had inadvertently disclosed the payments during a plenary session on Monday.
“We are commencing legal proceedings against Senate President Godswill Akpabio due to the alleged disbursement of ‘holiday allowances’ by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the ‘various accounts’ of senators, while approximately 137 million impoverished Nigerians are facing significant economic hardship,” SERAP declared.
Akpabio’s inadvertent revelation has sparked controversy across the nation, igniting debates about the appropriateness and timing of such financial transactions. Critics contend that when a considerable portion of the population is experiencing economic challenges, these allowances appear both unjust and inconsiderate.
Details pertaining to the lawsuit, including the plaintiffs and the specific charges, are yet to be disclosed.
However, this action underscores mounting tension and scrutiny regarding the utilization of public funds, especially in the current economic climate.
As of now, the Senate President has not issued an official response regarding the allegations and the impending legal action. People from various sectors across the nation are eagerly awaiting further developments, with many emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and responsible use of public funds during these difficult times.
