In a lapse of awareness, Akpabio didn’t realize that the proceedings were being broadcast live.

Speaking confidently, he said, “As soon as Senator Umahi takes his oath of office, we shall rearrange the office of the leadership. In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly.”

However, a fellow senator swiftly rushed to remind him that he was on air, prompting Akpabio to backtrack and correct himself.

He withdrew his initial statement and stated, “I withdraw that statement. In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return.”

The exact amount sent to the lawmakers remains unclear, as their salaries and allowances are often veiled in secrecy.

This incident has sparked reactions from Nigerians, who are expressing frustration about the leadership’s apparent extravagance amid the ongoing nationwide hardship due to the removal of fuel subsidy. Fuel prices have surged to N613 per litre from N197 per litre when the new government took office at the end of May.

A similar controversy emerged earlier when President Bola Tinubu proposed a bill to amend the 2022 Supplementary Act to allocate N70 billion to “support the working conditions” of new lawmakers. Additionally, N19 billion was approved to aid farmers affected by the 2022 floods across the country.

The incident of the “enjoyment allowance” adds to the controversies surrounding Akpabio’s tenure as Senate President, which has only lasted a few months. In July, he faced backlash after being captured on live TV joking about the phrase “Let The Poor Breathe,” which gained popularity following an interview with President Bola Tinubu. Although the senate president’s media office attempted to clarify the incident, many Nigerians expressed anger over the matter.
