ALGON Seeks FG’s Support For Borno Flood Victims

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has called on the federal government to urgently intervene and support victims of the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State. The floods, triggered by heavy downpours, have displaced at least 414,000 people and resulted in 30 fatalities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, ALGON’s National President, Aminu Mua’zu Maifata, expressed deep condolences to the affected families and condemned the severe impact on the city’s residents. Victims are currently living in challenging conditions, with many forced to sleep on the streets as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has set up nine Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

The statement highlighted ALGON’s call for the federal government to declare a state of emergency in Maiduguri and to mobilize resources for immediate relief. ALGON also urged NEMA and other relevant agencies to provide prompt relief materials and support to the affected communities. The association emphasized the need for a multi-stakeholder approach to address the disaster’s root causes and to prevent future occurrences.
